A Toast...The Mint Julep

A toast to the mint julep, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby since 1938. Located only three miles from Churchill Down - and The Run For The Roses - here is the julep recipe from Louisville's luxe historic Brown Hotel:
Make simple syrup by taking equal parts of hot water and sugar. Stir.
Add fresh mint and muddle - a pestle is best but you can use the back of a spoon.
Add crushed ice to an 8-ounce glass.
Add two ounces of simple syrup.
Top off with Kentucky Bourbon and add a sprig of fresh mint.

Bottom's up!
If you have some money burning a hole in your pocket...The Derby's official Bourbon supplier, Woodford Reserve, is making 73 special juleps - for $1000. Sounds pricey but is made with a limited edition silver Tiffany cup, Arctic Circle ice, fresh mint flown in from Morocco and organic sugar imported from Mauritius that is carefully hand-ground at Woodford's Kentucky distillery. The price tag also includes a limited edition gold-plated cup and sterling silver straw, an embroidered silk handkerchief (designed by one of the makers of racing silks for jockeys), plus a custom storage box.
