With Trafalgar Square being the largest square in London and a meeting place since the Middle Ages, it seemed ideally suited for coordination of our webcam endeavor. This site, having formerly been known as Charing, became Charing Cross after a memorial cross on the square and the underground station, ie, the "tube" still bears its name.
Every visitor should have Trafalgar Square on their itinerary. It is the busy junction of The Strand, The Mall (runs from Buckingham Palace to the Admirality Arch at Trafalgar Square) Whitehall and Charing Cross Road. You can also get a great view of the House of Parliment and Big Ben.
Always a bustling and great people watching spot, I find it particularly spectacular at night. It is a wonder to behold during the Christmas season when the Christmas tree is displayed. Since 1947, Norway has donated a tree to the square as a thank you for British support during World War II. Even as an adult, you experience a child like excitement in attending a performance by the different caroling groups while in the presence of a tree that is usually over 20 meters tall.
In the center of the square stands Nelson's Column which was built in 1842 to commemorate the Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson's victory over the French Fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.
You can easily spend a day taking in the sights and exhibits just around Trafalgar Square. To name a few...
On the northeast corner is St Martin-in-the-fields which is the fourth church on this site and has served as a model for many churches especially in the United
States.

To the north is the National Gallery which houses works by van Gogh, Renoir, Leonardo da Vinci and Claude Monet. Admission is free.

May weather in London is known for its unpredictable nature. I saw these new arrivals at J. Crew and thought these jackets would be perfect for sightseeing during a London spring/summer. Pair with a cute tee and you can go anywhere. FYI, sale items get an extra 20% off until Saturday, March 17, 2008, at 9:59 p.m.ET.
