Sea Shepherd Stops Japanese Whaling Season - Booyah!

"Japanese government officials pulled the plug on the annual whaling season due to harassing activities from Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The Sea Shepherd crew has allegedly thrown paint and rancid butter at whalers, and tossed tangled ropes in their propellers. Sea Shepherd boats have hounded Japanese whalers across many miles of ocean to slow them down, and foil their whale killing ways. The Japanese had set a goal of killing over 800 whales this season, but returned home with less than 200, according to one report.


Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson said their success was due to increasing their technological capacity, “We had better equipment, we had a longer-range helicopter … really, it came down to having more resources.” (Source: Associated Press) Sea Shepherd said they followed the main Japanese whaling ship, the Nisshin Maru for 2,000 miles.


The Japanese government said the activists are endangering their crew, and calls them terrorists. Sea Shepherd activists counter that they haven’t hurt anyone. (One of the Sea Shepherd boats was actually smashed by a Japanese boat, but no one from either side was injured severely.)


One of the Sea Shepherd ships is called the Bob Barker, and was named after the game show host who donated five million dollars for it. The ship is docked in New Zealand, and was retrofitted last year for action. Other celebrities such as Martin Sheen, Daryl Hannah, Edward Norton, Pierce Brosnan, and Christian Bale have reportedly contributed to their work. The Japanese whaling front organization called the Institute for Cetacean Research, said “This issue is not about whaling, but about the safety and violent activities at Sea.” (Source: ICRwhale.org)


So killing whales is not violent? Claims have been consistently made by the ICR that they are taking whales for research purposes, but somehow the whales wind up sold as food. Whale meat consumption may be on the decline in Japan however, due to shifting public attitudes. The federal government there has had to use tax payer dollars to promote whale meat, and even include it in some school children’s lunches.


Activists hope the Japanese government will stop the destructive tradition of whaling."

Furry War Heroes Have A Happy Ending

cynthia.fagen@nypost.com writes a heartwarming story regarding a happy ending for two furry war heroes. Read on...

"They became instant war heroes by foiling a suicide bomber trying to sneak into US soldiers' quarters in Afghanistan, and as a reward, they're getting homes -- and lots of doggie treats.

Three stray mutts -- Rufus, Target and Sasha -- were living near Sgt. Chris Duke and other US troops on a remote military base in Afghanistan on Feb. 22 when they spotted the bomber outside a building where 50 soldiers were sleeping.

Rufus bit the Taliban terrorist on the leg as Target and Sasha barked furiously.

Several soldiers -- unaware of the imminent danger -- tried shouting down the mutts. But the dogs continued barking, spooking the bomber into prematurely setting off 24 pounds of C4 explosives before he could get through the door -- and killing himself.

Hero Dog Rufus

Rufus and Target were seriously wounded. Tragically, Sasha died.

"There isn't a doubt in my mind [that the dogs] saved my life," said Duke, who was wounded by shrapnel -- and is now adopting Rufus.

Five soldiers, including Duke, were evacuated for medical treatment after the blast. But Duke, a National Guardsman, eventually returned to the base near the Pakistan border and nursed Rufus back to health.

It was the least he could do, he said. When Duke was homesick, Rufus picked up his spirits. And when Duke stood watch, Rufus hunkered down beside him.

But Duke said he never thought he would see his canine pal again after finally returning stateside in March.

That's when several nonprofit groups got involved.

"The dogs and the soldiers bonded in such a way that it would be a travesty to leave [the dogs] behind to fend for themselves in a war-torn area and the soldiers never knowing what happened to them," said Robert Misseri, of Robert's Cause, a nonprofit animal-advocacy group. "It's our mission to help these soldiers."

Another good Samaritan, Anna Canaan, 23, whose fiancé, Christopher Chiasson, is a soldier currently stationed at the same Afghan outpost in the Dand aw Patan district, created the Puppy Mission Rescue Facebook page to help the dogs.

Today, Rufus arrives in Manhattan before flying to Augusta, Ga., where he will spend the rest of his years with Duke and his wife, who is pregnant. Target, being flown out at the same time, will live in Phoenix with the Army medic who saved her life."

Paws Up For These Homemade Peanut Butter Doggy Treats!

Courtesy of the Whole Foods Market blog...here is a recipe for homemade tail wagging peanut butter/banana doggy treats:
"The parsley in these treats makes them a secret breath freshener for your pooch; substitute dried mint for half of the parsley, if you like. Don’t hesitate to adjust the size of the treats to accommodate very small or very large dogs, baking them a few minutes less or a few minutes more, as needed. If your dog has chewing challenges, grind the rolled oats in a food processor before adding them to the mixture."
Ingredients
1 banana, peeled

1 cup oat flour

2/3 cup rolled

1/2 cup dried parsley

3 tablespoons peanut butter

1 egg, beaten
Preheat oven to 300°F. Put banana in a large bowl and use a spoon or potato masher to mash it thoroughly. Add oat flour, oats, parsley, peanut butter and egg and stir well to combine. Set aside for 5 minutes. Roll mixture into 24 balls, using about 1 tablespoon dough for each; transfer to a large parchment paper-lined sheet tray as done. Use the back of a spoon or the heel of your hand to press each ball into a (1 1/2- to 2-inch) coin. Bake until firm and deep golden brown on the bottom, 40 to 45 minutes. Set aside to let cool completely.

Storage note: It's best to store these in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Or, freeze them to give to your pal later; just be sure to thoroughly thaw the treats before handing them out. Makes 2 dozen.

Per serving (1 each/16g-wt.): 45 calories (15 from fat), 1.5g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 10mg cholesterol, 10mg sodium, 6g total carbohydrate (1g dietary fiber, 1g sugar), 2g protein
